La Juventud Nacional de Alicante estuvo en el Juan Sebastian Elcano.

El 6 de julio dió comienzo en Alicante la regata de grandes veleros (Tall Ships' Race), empezando desde esta ciudad su primera etapa, la cual acabará 3 días después en la española ciudad de Barcelona.

En este evento participan grandes veleros, goletas y bergatines, buques escuelas la mayoría de ellos. Podemos destacar la participación del buque escuela español "Juan Sebastián de Elcano", uno de nuestros barcos más representativos y también, uno de los mayores y más antiguos veleros que aún navegan por el mundo. En la historia del cual figuran diez vueltas al mundo.

El "Elcano" tiene como cometido prinicpal el de Buque Escuela de Guardias Marinas, el formar a futuros oficiales de la Armada. A su vez cabe destacar su carácter de embajada flotante, puesto que su presencia en puertos extranjeros apoya a la política exterior española y, al mostrar su pabellón, difunde buena imagen de nuestro país.

El "Elcano" es un Bergantín-Goleta, de cuatro palos, con un trinquete cruzado. Caminando desde la popa hacía la proa por la cubierta, toda de madera, nos topamos con sus cuatro palos:
- El Palo Mesana, con el nombre de "Nautilus".
- El Palo Mayor Popel, con el nombre de "Asturias".
- El Palo Mayor Proel, con el nombre de "Almansa".
- El Trinquete, que recibe el nombre de "Blanca".

El buque es un pequeño pueblo flotante donde pueden vivir más de 200 personas, debido a que cuenta con autonomía suficiente para pasar decenas de días en la mar. Produce agua potable, se elabora pan, hay talleres, asistencia médica, religosa...

La dotación de "Elcano" está compuesta por 1 Capitán de Navío o Comandante, 1 Capitán de Fragata o 2º Comandante, 1 Capitán de Corbeta o Jefe de Estudios, 20 Oficiales, 38 Guardías Marinas, 20 Suboficiales, 140 Marineros y 6 Civiles. Todos ellos, gracias a su esfuerzo diarío hacen que "Elcano" continúe siendo escuela de navegación y pueda seguir mostrando con orgullo, por todo el mundo, el Pabellón de España.

En la regata también participaron otros buques representantes de diversos países, como el Buque Escuela "Guayas", representante de Ecuador; "El Palinuro" representante italian; la "Belle Poule" goleta francesa; el buque holandés "Stad Amsterdam"; el rumano "N.S. Mircea"; el uruguayo "Capitán Miranda", el portugués "Creoula", y otros en representación de Rusia, Bulgaria...
